A reflection on “The Law of Detachment”
Greetings from D.C.
Freedom. [ free·dom | \ ˈfrē-dəm ]
1 — The quality or state of being free, such as (a-h): the absence of necessity, coercion or constraint in choice or action; liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another; the quality or state of being exempt or released usually from something onerous; unrestricted use; ease, facility; the quality of being frank, open or outspoken; improper familiarity; boldness of conception or execution (Merriam-Webster)
Freedom and its many concepts mean different things for each of us, especially in light of the just-passed 4th of July celebration and amidst the #BlackLivesMatter movement. We saw this play out — from listening to President Trump’s speech from Mount Rushmore to re-reading Frederick Douglass’s words from 1852 — very different perspectives indeed. As we reflect further, we bear witness to the continued worthiness of freedom’s ideals for all as well as the continuous flaws with respect to its realization by all. There is still work to do.
Ironically, or perhaps simply synchronously, my meditation on the 4th centered on the Law of Detachment, also known as the Principle of Freedom. This meditation complemented what I shared last week — my efforts to decouple my self worth from my emotions in order to create more mindful connections with that and those around me. This means decoupling my self worth from expectations of outcomes as well.
Om Anandham Nama ~ my actions are blissfully free from attachment to outcome
My interpretation of these constructs of detachment and freedom — that it is both freeing and empowering when we don’t rigidly attach to how things, others, WE are “supposed to be” and rather lean into the security that can come from letting go into the wisdom of uncertainty. The Universe then manifests infinite possibilities and opportunities for us, unfolding as they should.
I wrote I am free to be me twenty times in my journal, reminding myself of this simplistic truth. Join me if it helps.

This learning is part of a 21 Day Abundance Meditation as presented by Deepak Chopra that I am currently doing. Please let me know if this resonates with you. And as always, reach out if you have any questions or thoughts.
I hope to see you tonight or another time on the mat to begin this work of slowing down and turning inwards.
With gratitude,
XO
